A CARRIAGE RIDE IN SINTRA

Welcome to Sintra

The horse-drawn carriages are an ex-libris of the World Heritage Site of the Historical Center of Sintra. Without ever having ceased to exist, the horses continue trotting through the streets of Vila and the Sintra Mountain, giving the passenger a part of the magic of the mountain and the romanticism of its surroundings.

There are 10 carriages pulled by two horses, with capacity of up to four persons each.

The carriages are original ‘milords’ and ‘jardineira’ of the 1920s, well recuperated to preserve the old style. 9 of them have hoods to rise to protect from sun, wind and light rain, if necessary.

> Volta à Vila

“Volta à Vila” - tour gives you a glimpse of both the old and modern Sintra.

Volta à Vila - tour
App. Duration: 25 minutes

“Volta à Vila” - tour gives you a glimpse of both the old and modern Sintra. It is the most traditional of our trips: leaving from the old town of Sintra, it passes its water fountain and park, the City Hall, the station, the Morais square and a few of the old “quintas” of the town.

> Regaleira

This tour is a bit more green and romantic: going along the mountain road it goes as far as Quinta da Regaleira and returns.

Regaleira - tour
App. Duration: 25 minutes

This tour is a bit more green and romantic: going along the mountain road it goes as far as Quinta da Regaleira and returns. On the way there the carriage passes the newly reconstructed Lawrence’s Hotel, a Moorish Fountain and a waterfall. The return-trip is initiated in front of Regaleira, on the Square of Relógio, a famous Arab-style mansion. During the return-trip, you pass yet another fountain and have a unique view of the old town from above it. Entering the old town, the carriage passes by the Palace of Valenças and the Toy Museum. This Tour includes no stoppages.

> Seteais

This tour really gives the sensation of being between the sea and the mountain.

Seteais - tour
App. Duration: 35 minutes

This tour really gives the sensation of being between the sea and the mountain. It is the same as the tour “Regaleira”, but instead of initiating your return by Regaleira, the horses continue a bit higher on the mountain, up to the Hotel Palace of Seteais. At the hotel you can get off the carriage and, from the lookout of the hotel, see the fantastic views of both the sea and the Pena Palace on the top of the mountain. The carriage waits 10 minutes while you visit and then returns to town.

> S. Pedro

This trip, just like the one of Vila, starts by passing by the old water fountain and the City Hall, but by the station, the horses start climbing up the mountain.

S. Pedro - tour
App. Duration: 35 minutes

This trip, just like the one of Vila, starts by passing by the old water fountain and the City Hall, but by the station, the horses start climbing up the mountain. The carriage passes through a quiet residential area from which – through the trees and the houses – you have a magnificent view of the ocean. Climbing until Quinta da Vigía, the carriage turns down to the road of Santa Maria, the upper part of pargue de Liberdade, and, finally, the palace of Valenças.

> Monserrate

The trip to Monserrate Park is just to marvel the greenness of the Mountain of Sintra.

Monserrate - tour
App. Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes (roundtrip travel and 30 minutes visit time)

The trip to Monserrate Park is just to marvel the greenness of the Mountain of Sintra. On the way there, you pass various mansions and bridges, fountains and waterfalls. The oriental Palace of Monserrate is under recuperation. The park itself is romantic and exotically lush. At the entrance, on the other side of the road, there are picnic tables by several little ponds. Here the carriage waits for you for app. 30 minutes while you make your visit.

> Lagos

This is the “mountain climbing” trip. The views on the way up are magnificent and you feel the coolness of the green mountain, even in the summer.

Lagos - tour
App. Duration: 2 hours and 40 minutes (roundtrip travel and 1h30 minutes visit time)

This is the “mountain climbing” trip. The views on the way up are magnificent and you feel the coolness of the green mountain, even in the summer. The road winds up between the walls and gates of various mansions. The destination of the trip is the square of the gates of the Park of Pena Palace. There you have various options of visit: Pena Palace (walking through the park to the Palace takes 10 - 15 mins.), the Moorish castle, whose entrance is about 200 meters from the square - or the park itself, simply walking midst the green, lush and flowery park between the ponds and the ducks. Whatever is your option, the carriage will wait an hour and a half until you are finished, and then take you back down to town.
